Day Trading Signals: Intraday Setups
What separates intraday signals from scalps and swings, the sessions they depend on, and how to judge one that is an hour old.
Intraday trading signals sit between the two extremes and that is exactly why they are the most useful band for most people. A scalp needs the order placed inside a minute. A swing trade takes four days to tell you anything. An intraday signal gives you several minutes to act and closes the same day.
They also depend more on session timing than any other style, because the entire trade has to complete inside one liquid window. This page covers what an intraday signal actually contains, the windows they live in, how to judge one that is already an hour old, and where they stop working.
Day trading signals open and close within the same session, with stops around 20 to 45 pips and first targets of 40 to 90. They survive a delay of several minutes rather than seconds, which makes them the practical middle ground between scalping signals nobody can execute and swing signals that take days to resolve.
Where intraday sits
| Scalp | Intraday | Swing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hold time | Minutes | 2 to 6 hours | Days |
| Stop | 5 to 15 pips | 20 to 45 pips | 60 to 200 pips |
| First target | 5 to 20 pips | 40 to 90 pips | 150 to 500 pips |
| Win rate | 60 to 70 percent | 50 to 60 percent | 40 to 50 percent |
| Risk to reward | 1 : 0.8 to 1 : 1.5 | 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 2 | 1 : 2 to 1 : 4 |
| Survives a delay of | Under a minute | Several minutes | An hour or more |
| Overnight financing | None | None | Every night held |
| Weekend gap risk | None | None | Yes |
The two bottom rows are a genuine advantage that gets overlooked. An intraday trade closes before the rollover, so it pays no financing and cannot be gapped over. Those costs are real on swing positions, as covered in swing trading signals.
The windows they live in
An intraday signal has to open and close inside a liquid session, so it depends on the clock more than any other style. Outside these windows the same setup appears and fails far more often.
| Window | UK time | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| London open | 08:00 to 11:00 | The first directional move, best for European pairs |
| Midday lull | 11:00 to 13:00 | Ranges tighten, few signals worth taking |
| New York overlap | 13:30 to 17:00 | Largest volume of the day, US data lands |
| Late New York | After 17:00 | Thinning out, positions should be closing rather than opening |
A signal published at 16:45 with a six hour expectation is not really an intraday trade, it is a swing trade that has not been labelled as one. Worth noticing, because the sizing should be different.
Judging one that is already an hour old
This is the check that matters most for this style, because an intraday signal degrades faster than a swing and slower than a scalp. The rule scales rather than being a fixed pip count.
- 01Compare live price to the published entryIf price has travelled more than a third of the way towards the first target, the ratio you would accept is not the published one.
- 02Check the session has time leftA trade needing four hours, taken at 16:00 UK time, will still be open when liquidity drains.
- 03Check what is scheduledA release landing inside the expected hold turns an intraday trade into a news trade, which is covered in news trading signals.
The arithmetic behind the first check is in why forex signals fail, and the news timing is in news trading signals.
What an intraday signal should contain
Same five fields as always, covered in how to read a forex signal. Two things are specific to this style.
- A stop that fits the session range rather than a round number
- A first target at least one and a half times the stop distance
- A stated close by time, so the trade does not silently become a swing position
- Published inside the window it needs to complete in
- No stated exit time on a trade described as intraday
- A 20 pip stop on a pair that routinely swings 30 pips in an hour
- Published at the end of a session with a multi hour expectation
- A first target smaller than the stop, which needs a very high win rate to survive
Costs, and where they land
Intraday sits in a good place on costs. Spread is charged once against a reasonably sized target, and the two overnight costs do not apply at all.
| Cost | Scalp | Intraday | Swing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spread as a share of the target | Up to 15 percent | 1 to 3 percent | Under 1 percent |
| Overnight financing | None | None | Every night |
| Gap risk | None | None | Weekends and news |
| Trades per month | Very high | Moderate | Low |
Moderate frequency at low cost per trade is the reason this band tends to reproduce a provider’s record more closely than either extreme. The full cost picture is in the cost of holding a trade.
Who intraday signals suit
Anyone who can look at a phone every twenty or thirty minutes during one session. Not continuously, and not once a day.
Enough for a lunch break or a gap between meetings. Not enough for a signal seen the following morning.
If you cannot check during your session at all, swing signals are the honest answer rather than intraday ones taken late. If you can watch continuously and your spread is genuinely tight, scalping signals open up. Most people are in the middle, which is why this band exists.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are intraday trading signals?
Trade instructions meant to open and close within the same session, usually in two to six hours. Stops sit around 20 to 45 pips with first targets of 40 to 90, and no position is carried overnight.
Are day trading signals better than swing signals?
Neither is better. Intraday avoids overnight financing and weekend gaps but needs you available during a session, while swing signals survive being seen late and carry those overnight costs instead.
How long is an intraday signal valid for?
Until price reaches a level or the session ends. Compare live price against the published entry, and if it has travelled more than a third of the way towards the first target, the ratio has changed enough to leave it.
What win rate should intraday signals have?
Around 50 to 60 percent with winners about one and a half to two times the losers. A run of four or five losses is ordinary at that rate and does not mean the service has stopped working.
When are intraday signals published?
Mostly around the London open and the New York overlap, roughly 08:00 to 11:00 and 13:30 to 17:00 UK time, because the trade has to complete inside a liquid window.
Do day trading signals pay overnight financing?
No, provided the position closes before the daily rollover. That is one of the two real advantages over swing trading, the other being no exposure to weekend gaps.
Can I follow intraday signals with a job?
If you can check a phone every twenty or thirty minutes during one session, yes. If you can only look once a day, swing signals are the honest answer rather than intraday ones taken hours late.
