What Pip Value Actually Means
Pip value is what one pip of movement is worth in cash on your position. It is the number that turns a chart into money, and it is the input every risk calculation depends on.
Three things determine it: the size of your position, the currency the pair is quoted in, and the currency your account is denominated in. Change any one and the answer changes.
The Standard Reference Numbers
On a pair quoted in US dollars, held in a US dollar account, the values are straightforward.
- Standard lot, 100,000 units, about 10 USD per pip
- Mini lot, 10,000 units, about 1 USD per pip
- Micro lot, 1,000 units, about 0.10 USD per pip
These hold for EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD and any other pair where the dollar is the quote currency. They do not hold everywhere else, which is where the calculator earns its place.
Where It Gets Complicated
Yen pairs. A pip on USDJPY is the second decimal place, 0.01, not the fourth. Traders who forget this size positions wrong by a factor of one hundred, and it is the single most common pip error.
The dollar as base currency. On USDCAD or USDCHF, pip value shifts with the exchange rate rather than staying fixed, because the quote currency is not the dollar.
Cross pairs. On EURGBP or AUDNZD, pip value has to be converted through the rate between the quote currency and your account currency. There is no shortcut worth memorising.
Gold and indices. XAUUSD and index CFDs use different contract conventions entirely. Check your broker's specification rather than assuming forex rules apply.
How to Use This in a Trade
Suppose you have a 5,000 dollar account and risk one percent per trade, so 50 dollars. Your setup calls for a 25 pip stop.
Fifty dollars divided by 25 pips means you need a position worth 2 dollars per pip. At roughly 1 dollar per pip on a mini lot, that is two mini lots. The stop distance and the risk amount determined the position size. You never chose a lot size first.
That sequence is the whole point. Our lot size calculator runs the same arithmetic in the other direction if you prefer to start from the risk figure.
Pipettes
Most brokers quote a fifth decimal place on standard pairs and a third on yen pairs. That final digit is a pipette, and ten pipettes make one pip.
It matters when reading spreads. A spread displayed as 12 is 1.2 pips, not 12. Misreading this makes a normal spread look ten times worse than it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my pip value different from the standard figure?
Usually because your account currency differs from the pair's quote currency, so a conversion applies. Yen pairs and gold also use different decimal conventions.
Does pip value change while a trade is open?
On pairs where the quote currency matches your account currency, no. On cross pairs and pairs where the dollar is the base, yes, it drifts slightly with the exchange rate.
What is a pip on gold?
On most brokers one dollar of gold movement is 100 pips, so a 15 dollar stop is 1,500 pips. Contract sizes vary, so confirm yours before sizing a gold position.
Do I need this if my broker shows profit in cash?
Yes, because the platform shows the result after you are in the trade. Pip value is what you need before entering, to work out how large the position should be.
